As part of National Community Development Week, the City of Anniston celebrated the impact of the Community Development Block Grant by touring different developments each day. On Thursday, April 13th, CCHFH hosted the City of Anniston and members of its Community Development Department. Executive Director, Amanda Pinson, spoke to the importance of the funds and how they affect local families in Calhoun County.

Kierra Stanford (far right), was approved as a partner family in 2019 citing unlivable conditions, astronomical rent prices, and wanting a safe place to raise her then six-year-old son as her motivation for applying. Some four years and another child later, her resolve to provide a safe place to raise her family has grown.

After COVID-19 ravaged the nation in 2020, Kierra and other partner families were forced to wait with no definitive answer for when their homes would be built. Not only did construction cease, but the cost of building materials tripled, effectively tripling the cost of a home in our program. Thankfully, with a little patience and resolve, prices for materials gradually decreased. CCHFH was also able to supplement the cost of building for this family largely in part to volunteer labor, monetary donations, gifts in-kind like the land donated by the City of Jacksonville, and grants like HOME funds. As a result of community support, this beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home will change the lives of this family for years to come.

A safe, decent ,and affordable place to live frees families from the physical and mental hardships associated with living in substandard housing by placing them on a path of increased confidence and self-reliance, but our work is far from over. CCHFH has changed the way low-income families see the world for 30 years-- with 158 homes built, 62 homes renovated, and over 100 Brush with Kindness projects, the impact is palpable. Consider making your own impact by donating here.

This past weekend, Teachers Unlimited, a group of dedicated teachers who wanted to make a difference not just in the classroom, but on the worksite, joined the inspiring Women Build fundraising and build event. Led by Calhoun Cleburne Habitat for Humanity Board Member, Joy Wright, these selfless educators traded textbooks for hammers to lend their skills to constructing safe and affordable housing for the recipients of these two homes. "I am delighted to support Calhoun Cleburne Habitat for Humanity, both as a community member and board member," Wright shared. "Our mission to build homes, communities, and hope is a wonderful goal." Their hard work and enthusiasm will not only help two families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing, but also showcases the incredible strength and diverse talents of women in our community. These homes are being built in partnership with Alabama Associations of Habitat for Humanity Affiliates through their allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Thanks and their support for Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout Alabama, we are able to continue our mission and provide improve the quality of life for families in our community.

Calhoun Cleburne Habitat for Humanity swung into action this past weekend, kicking off our exciting Women Build initiative with a symbolic wall raising. This new build and fundraising event carries the weight of not just one, but two dreams – those of the Allen and Davis families, who will soon call this quiet community home. The wall raising ceremony marks a crucial milestone in the construction journey. It is a powerful symbol of progress, signifying the transition from a foundation of hope to a tangible structure that will soon become a home and for the Allen and Davis families. As the walls rose, the significance of what such a life-changing journey this will be for these families became clear-- a future bright with stability and security. More than just bricks and mortar, this home represents a sanctuary for their children to grow and a place where their dreams can flourish. Let's raise the walls of hope together! Visit the here for more information on how to get involved and be a part of something truly special.
